Jesus, the Light of the World

I. JESUS CLAIMS TO BE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. 8:12

For the ________ woman Jesus the light of the world was the light of _____, exposing her sin and directing her to the way of deliverance.

For the unbelieving scribes and Pharisees Jesus the light of the world was the light of ______, exposing their sin and leaving them to walk in darkness in the ________ of their hearts.

To follow the light, Christ, means to trust and _____ Him, to live as He lived. It means following where the ______ of His word leads us.

II. THE PHARISEES QUESTION THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS. 8:13-14

Christ had just made the fullest claim to ______ when He said “I am the light of the world.”
Yahweh-Elohim was the God of ______.

How true is John’s statement in chapter 1, verse 5, “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not __________ it.”

Jesus had come from His Father in heaven and would return; and therefore, as the Son, He could not ____ but spoke the ______.

III. THE FATHER ALSO TESTIFIES OF JESUS. 8:15-18


Jesus is saying that the Pharisees were judging His claims of Deity based on ________ appearances.

Jesus may have looked like just a mere man but what man performs the _____ and ________ Jesus performs?

The judgment of these Pharisees is made with an __________ heart and is based on prejudice and ________.

IV. THE PHARISEES ARE SPIRITUALLY BLIND. 8:19-20

The __________ was in the court of women (the only place where women were allowed to go and worship) showing that Jesus did not want to exclude the women from his ________ as was the practice of the religious teachers of the day.

V. JESUS WARNS THE PHARISEES OF IMPENDING DEATH. 8:21-24

Those who ________ the Messiah while He was on earth will not find Him, will not come to know Him, when He is gone back to His Father. They will die as they lived, in their _____.

These Pharisees were sure they were going to heaven and would not find _______ there. What a horrid surprise they will have when they die and find themselves, not Jesus, in _____.

Failure to believe in Jesus and to obey Him results in ________ death.

VI. THE PHARISEES ARE SPIRITUALLY IGNORANT. 8:25-27

In every word of Jesus the mind of the Father is expressed. Therefore, when the Pharisees reject Jesus they reject the ________ also.

Men need something more than ________ light; they need _______________________.

These Pharisees knew the Scriptures and could recite the Scriptures but they did not ________ the Scriptures because their hearts were ________. Romans 1:21-22, Ephesians 4:17-18

VII. JESUS SPEAKS OF HIS COMING DEATH.  8:28-29

When the Jews put Jesus to death (lift Him up on the _____), then they will know (ginōskō – you will recognize and perceive) that He is the One He has always claimed to be, and that in His words and works He reveals and represents the ________.

Men who were ________ by sin and Satan might regard Jesus as an impostor, a liar and as a blasphemer, but Jesus knew that the Father approved and would yet ________ Him fully.

Vindicate Jesus, the Father did. After sinners lifted Jesus up on the cross and placed Him in the grave, the Father _______ Him up from death unto life and ________ Him at His right hand above all rule and authority. Eph 1:20, Romans 1:4

VIII. MANY GAVE ASSENT TO THE CLAIMS OF JESUS. 8:30

Many gave ___________ assent to the claims of Jesus. They were momentarily impressed and moved by the words of Jesus and their anger towards him was temporarily ________.

As soon as Jesus showed these people that mere mental acceptance of His claims was not ________, but that they must surrender themselves unconditionally to Him as their personal Deliverer from bondage to Satan and ____, they became incensed and no longer believed in Him in any sense.

By the end of the chapter they were picking up ________ to stone Jesus to ________.
