Jesus and the Legalists

l. THE LEGALISTS WANT TO KILL JESUS 7:1


Jesus withdrew Himself from the Capernaum multitudes to be with his disciples; He did not wish to go about in Judea because the Jews (the Jewish ________) were seeking to ____ Him.

Although the Lord had come from heaven for the very purpose of laying down His ____, the exact ____ of His death would be determined by His Father and Him and not these legalists.

These legalists considered Jesus a ____ breaker, a false prophet and a blasphemer. They accused Him of breaking the Sabbath, opposing the teaching of Moses, and making Himself out to be equal with ____.

ll. THE LEGALISTS AND THEIR FEAST 7:2

The Feast of Tabernacles was the last and great harvest festival of the Jewish year, celebrated during the month of October. It was a joyful commemoration of redemption out of ______ and it foreshadowed the future kingdom rest for God’s people through the coming _________.

_______, (temporary shelters), were erected along the streets for the pilgrims thus the feast also became know as the Feast of Booths.

lll. JESUS AND HIS UNBELIEVING BROTHERS 7:3-5

When it appears that Jesus is not in a hurry to attend the feast, His brothers — James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas (or Jude), Matt. 13:55 — begin to _______ him.

Jesus’ brothers didn’t understand His _______ and who He was because his brothers did not _______ in Him for who He was, but only for what He did.

After Christ’s __________ the attitude of these brothers changed completely (Acts 1:14).

lV. JESUS HATED BY THE WORLD 7:6-10

For every deed and action of the Lord there is a definite moment, determined from all eternity in the ____ of God.

The brothers wanted Jesus to show off His _______ to the world but Jesus points out to them that the world could not hate them, but it hated Him and wanted to _____ Him.

V. THE LEGALISTS WERE LOOKING FOR JESUS 7:11-13

Some people were saying Jesus was a _____ man, that is, one who aims to do good, who was morally upright, and not a _______.

Others were saying Jesus was leading the people _______. They saw in Jesus a ______ prophet, who was making false claims about Himself, about God and about the law of Moses.

Vl. JESUS TEACHES IN THE SYNAGOGUE 7:14-18

Jesus had never received instruction in any of the rabbinical schools, so His _______ was suspect.

Jesus knew the “letters” (the sacred writings of Scripture and their interpretation) _______, for being ____ He was present when they were given by the Spirit to the prophets.

To be neutral with respect to Christ is not _______. If you are not for Him, then you are _______ Him.


Vlll. THE LEGALISTS’ JUDGMENT IS UNJUST 7:21-24

Jesus said, if ceremonial cleansing of a child is ________ on the Sabbath, then why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the _______?

These legalists were ________. They sought to enforce the law on others while breaking the law themselves.
