Unbelief and Betrayal

l. MANY DISCIPLES ARE OFFENDED BY THE LORD’S TEACHING

A “disciple” (mathētēs) means one who is a _______ or a pupil.

These so-called disciples were made up of a class of people who were attracted to Christ because of His _______ but not His teaching, which they considered “difficult” (sklēros – _____) to accept.

Instead of coming to Jesus with their questions and concerns they talked about Him behind His back, seeking to sow _____ of _______ by criticizing what they had heard.
Romans 16:17, 2 Thessalonians 2:10, 2 Timothy 3:8

ll. CHRIST’S RESPONSE TO THE GRUMBLING DISCIPLES

Showing once again that He was God incarnate, Jesus ______ the _______ of these grumbling disciples.

Jesus knowing what was in their hearts asks them: does this, does my teaching, cause you to stumble? (scandalidzō – scandalize – to be outraged. Does it entice you to _______, to abandon the truth, to abandon ___?)

Jesus goes on to say in effect: If you can not accept that I have come down out of _______ what are you going to say when you see Me going back to _______ where I was before.

Soon would the Son of God return to that place of _______ where He was before He became flesh, before His __________.  John 17:1-5

Notice that it is as the Son of ____, not the Son of ____, that Jesus returns to heaven.

lll. JESUS EXPLAINS WHY MANY DO NOT BELIEVE

The PHYSICIAN’S report: Man is in a state of total spiritual inability. Every _______ is completely ruined and unable to function.

The CORONER’S report: Sin has so affected every part of man’s being that he is in a state of total spiritual _______.

lV. MANY SO-CALLED DISCIPLES LEAVE JESUS

Every true follower of Jesus Christ will ________ in the faith to the end.
Matthew 24:13, Colossians 1:22-23, 2 Timothy 4:3-4, 4:7-8, Hebrews 3:12, 1 John 2:19

The doctrine of the perseverance of the saints does not maintain that all who _______ the Christian faith are certain of heaven. It is spiritually born believers who persevere to the end.

True believers do fall into temptations, and they do commit grievous sins, but ________, not sin, is the _______ of their life.

V. PETER’S CONFESSION

The Lord’s question was a _____, a challenge to see whether their faith was any different than those who _______ Him.

It was _______ that had attracted others to Christ, but it was the ______ of the Lord Jesus which captivated Peter who said, You have words of eternal life.

Man wants to know first before he is ready to _______. But God always reverses man’s order of things. It is impossible, utterly impossible, to ______ Divine truth until we have believed it.

Peter was sure that Christ was the Son of God, because the Father put it in his ______ to believe “the words of eternal life” he had learned from Jesus.

Vl. JESUS CHOOSES VESSELS OF MERCY & VESSELS OF WRATH

Jesus _______ those who will believe on Him and He chooses those who will not, did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?

Judas’ unbelief and betrayal did not catch Jesus by _______ for He knew this from the beginning. 1 Peter 2:6-10, Jude 4, Romans 9:21-24

Judas was a vessel of ______ prepared for destruction by God’s design and by Judas’ choice. Judas followed the desires of his own sinful nature.
