Jesus Feeds the Multitude

JOHN 6:1-15

I. Jesus Departs From Jerusalem 6:1

There are three reasons I believe the Lord left Jerusalem when He did.

1. It was the Father’s will that He leave or He wouldn’t have left.
2. His hour had not yet come, to be handed over to the Jews and put to death.
3. The Son God would not remain and cast precious pearls before swine.

II. A Large Crowd Follows Jesus 6:2

How completely these people failed in their discernment and appreciation of the person of Christ!

Few today see in Christ anything more than a wonderful man and a good teacher.

Jesus says four times that it is an evil and adulterous generation that seeks for a miraculous sign.

III. Jesus Went Up On A Mountain With His Disciples 6:3

Jesus withdrew from the multitude and went up on the mountain to be alone with His disciples and quite probably to spend time in prayer with the Father.

Perhaps Jesus also spent time teaching His disciples how the signs He was performing were in preparation for the great sign of His coming death and resurrection, “the sign of Jonah.”

These miracles that Jesus performed drew many after Him, but only a few to Him.

IV. The Passover Feast was Near 6:4

Here the Passover was at hand and the Lamb of God stood before them and they did not see it. 2 Corinthians 4:4

Their outward physical condition was an outward sign of their inward spiritual condition.

If Christ is indeed your Passover Lamb then fleeing from sin and obeying His Word will be proof of it.

V. The Unbelief of Philip and Andrew 6:5-9

Even though an unworthy motive had drawn this crowd to Christ, He was not indifferent to their need.

By asking Philip, “where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” Jesus was testing him to see if understood who He was and what He could do. Philip failed the test.

How we are so like Philip when we are faced with impossible circumstances. We rack our minds to find some man-made solution instead of turning to the Lord with whom all things are possible.

Like Philip, Andrew calculated without Christ. And therefore he saw only a hopeless situation.

How thankful we should be that God’s blessings are dispensed according to the riches of His grace, and not according to the poverty of our faith.

VI. Jesus Miraculously Feeds the Multitude 6:10-13

How patient was the Lord with Philip and Andrew despite their lack of faith.

The faith of Philip and Andrew may have failed but not their obedience. If faith is weak, obedience is the best way in which it may be strengthened.

Here Christ teaches us to acknowledge the giver of every good gift, and to recognize Him as the One who provides for our needs.

Food was literally called into existence which did not exist before.

VII. The Response of the people 6:14-15

Instead of prostrating themselves at His feet, in reverent worship, they would “take Him by force to make Him a king”; and this for their own ends, thinking that He would emancipate them from Rome.

Many there are who regard our Lord as a Prophet who have never seen their need of Him as a Savior from sin and a Refuge from the wrath to come.

Christ could not be their King until He had first become their Priest, offering Himself as a sacrifice for sin.
