John 5:1-15
An Exposition of John 5:1-15
Jesus Sovereignly Dispenses His Mercy

I. JESUS IN JERUSALEM AT THE FEAST 5:1

Jesus main _______ for going to Jerusalem was not to observe a feast but to heal a man (physically and spiritually) given to Him by His Father and use the miracle as a means _______ of Himself as the Messiah to the people.

II. JESUS CAME TO THE POOL OF BETHESDA 5:2-4

The _____ gate was the gate through which the sacrificial lambs were brought to the temple. The sheep gate, then, points us to Christ the sacrificial lamb of God for _______.

It was through the sheep gate that Jesus came to the pool which in Hebrew is called Bethesda meaning “house of _______.”

We are by nature ________blind and crippled by sin. We are totally helpless, powerless, to do anything to _______ our condition.

III. JESUS SINGLES OUT A LAME MAN 5:5-7

It is interesting to note that thirty eight years was the exact length of time that Israel spent in the wilderness of ____ after they came under law at Sinai. There we see how spiritual infirmity was _______ by God’s law.

Jesus was light shining in the darkness, but the darkness did not comprehend it. Such is fallen human nature 2 Corinthians 4:4.

If it were not for _______ grace every member of Adam’s race would perish eternally.

It would have been just as _____ for Jesus to have healed the entire multitude as to make a single individual well. But He did not.

The only __________ for the physical and spiritual healing of this man is the mere sovereign _______ of Christ Himself.

IV. JESUS HEALS THE LAME MAN 5:8-9a

If Jesus would have _______ until the lame man understood who was talking to him and cried out for mercy the man would _______ have been healed.

The lame man made no cry for _______, and when Christ asked if he was willing to be made well there was no evidence of _______.

The _______ that we have been born again is that we repent of our sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and walk in _________ of life.

V. JESUS HEALS ON THE SABBATH DAY 5:9b-10

The miracle would have caused no problem except that it occurred on the _______ Day.

The Pharisees had superimposed upon the ____ of God their own hair-splitting distinctions and rabbinical restrictions.

Instead of looking upon the Sabbath as a day of special consecration unto works of gratitude for the salvation which God had _______, the Pharisees viewed it as a day of cessation from all (common) work with a view to the salvation which man must _______.

VI. JESUS REMAINED ANNONYMOUS 5:11-13

This man had been healed and he had obeyed the command of his healer; but he did not yet comprehend His Divine _______.

Understanding concerning the person of Christ _______ (and not precedes) an experimental knowledge of His _____.

The Lord had withdrawn from the healed man that he might be _______.

VII. JESUS CONFRONTS THE HEALED MAN IN THE TEMPLE 5:14

That this man’s _______ as well as his body had been healed is evidenced by the fact that he went straight to the House of Prayer and Praise (the _______).

Grace does not ignore the requirements of God’s _______: Romans 5:21

__________ in a life of sin would be proof that He had not been reconciled to God. 1 John 3:9

VII. JESUS SINGLED OUT TO THE JEWS BY THE HEALED MAN 5:15

The healed man gave all the _______ for his healing to Jesus, “it was Jesus who made me well.”

So the sinner saved by grace gives God all the credit for his salvation from first to last. The Father _______ it in eternity past, the Son __________ it on the cross, the Spirit _______ it through the new birth.
