John 5:16-30 
AN EXPOSITION OF JOHN 5:16-30
“Jesus, Equal with God”

I. IN HIS WORK 5:16-18

The Jews sought to kill Jesus because He had _______ on the Sabbath and he had told the healed man to take up his pallet and walk which violated the legalists’ ______.

In saying “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working” Jesus affirms His absolute _______ with the Father.

Though God _______ on the first seventh day from all His creative work, He has never rested from His governmental work, His providential work, supplying the ______ of His creatures.

If the Father ministered to the needs of His creatures on the Sabbath day, then by like reason it must also be ______ for God the Son, the Lord of the _______, to engage in works of necessity and mercy on the Sabbath.

II. IN HIS WILL 5:19

The Son can do nothing of Himself, literally, nothing out of Himself, that is, He cannot act __________ of the Father.

The Son of God being fully man and fully God has a ____ that is in complete ________ with His Father.


Not only does Jesus do what the Father does, but He does it as the Father does it, that is, in a manner consistent with the absolute perfections of their _______ Divine _______.

The Jews did not _______ when they concluded that our Lord made Himself _____ with God.

III. IN HIS KNOWLEDGE 5:20

The Father keeps no _______ from the Son.

Fallen man (in his fallen state) is incapable of _______ God let alone knowing what God knows. The believer learns gradually and slowly and only then as he is taught by the _______ _______.

Christ has the capacity to apprehend and comprehend “___ things that the Father does,” therefore, He must be “______ with God,” for none but God could know the Father’s mind perfectly.

IV. IN HIS SOVEREIGN RIGHTS

The Father gives life, so does the Son, and He gives life to _____ He wishes.

To impart life is a Divine __________. He owes life to none, is under obligation to give life to none. The fact that He would give life to any of Adams fallen race is pure _________ favor.

V. IN HIS DIVINE HONORS

The Father always works through the ____, in order that all may honor the Son even as they honor the Father in order that the Father and the Son who are equal in essence, equal in work, equal in will, equal in knowledge, and equal in sovereign rights may also be equal in ______.

The Jews who claimed to honor the Father actually _______ Him by dishonoring His Son: He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

VI. IN HIS IMPARTING LIFE 5:24-26

Believing unto eternal life and escaping judgment is the result of having been brought to life spiritually (passed out of death into life).

The believer does not come into ________ because the judgment due him fell upon his ________ Jesus Christ.

The voice of Christ penetrates into the place of _______, and because His voice is a life-giving voice, the _______ hear it and live.

VII. IN HIS JUDICIAL POWER AND AUTHORITY

Judgment has been committed to the ____ not only in order that all should honor Him even as they honor the Father but because He is the Son of ____.
