John 4:1-26 

AN EXPOSTION OF JOHN 4:1-26

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

 

I. JESUS GOES TO GALILEE 4:1-6

 

John’s ministry was ________ while Jesus’ ministry was ________.

 

Jesus was making ________ but was leaving it to His disciples to ________ them.

 

Notice, it was disciples that were being baptized. ________ baptism has always been the ________ pattern.

 

Knowing the hearts of the Pharisees and how they were already full of hatred and jealousy, Jesus seeks to avoid a ___________with them by leaving the region of Judea and going to Galilee (Jesus hour had not yet come).

 

Jesus had to go through ________ because it was a part of His Father’s divine _____.

 

II. JESUS, NO RESPECTER OF PERSONS 4:7-9

 

Jesus arrived at Jacob's well at six o'clock in the evening, the usual time for _______ to come for water.

 

Notice that Jesus was at the well _____. “I am found of them that sought me not.” Isaiah 65:1. Christ’s salvation is not only ________ by those to whom it comes, but at first, it is always ________.

 

This was no ________. The Samaritan woman chose this hour because she expected the well would be deserted. But, in fact, she went to the well that day, at that time, because God’s hour had struck when she was to meet the ________.  Proverbs 16:9 

 

Tenderly and patiently Jesus led this Samaritan woman step by step, touching her _____, searching her ________, awakening her soul to her desperate need for living water (eternal life).

 

The Samaritans were a _______ race, part Jew and part Gentile, that grew out of the Assyrian captivity of the ten northern tribes in 727 B.C.

 

The Samaritan woman did not know that this Jew speaking to her was the long expected ________ Himself.

 

III. JESUS, GIVER OF LIVING WATER

 

Jesus pointed out to her that she was ignorant of three important facts:

1. Who He was – “if you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you…”

2. What He had to offer – “He would have given you living water.”

3. How she could receive it – “you would have asked.”

 

Jesus was speaking about ________ water, but the Samaritan woman interpreted His words to mean literal water.

 

Whoever ________ to drink of this material water (or anything the world has to offer) will thirst _______.

 

Whoever takes ____ drink of the water Jesus gives will ______ thirst again; but the water He gives will become a well of water springing up to eternal life.

 

IV. JESUS BRINGS CONVICTION AND CALLS FOR TRUE WORSHIP 4:16-24

 

The only way to prepare the soil of the ______ for the seed (the Word) is to plow it up with ________.

 

There can be no ________ without ________.

 

The Samaritan woman told Jesus a _____ truth when she said “I have no husband.”

 

Jesus shocked her with His _________ and brought her under conviction.

 

It is much more comfortable to discuss ________ than to face one's _____!

V. JESUS, THE I AM 4:25-26

 

In spite of her ________, there was one truth this woman did know: the ________ was coming and would declare all things to us.

 

Our Lord's response to her statement was, literally: “I that speak to you, _____!” He dared to utter the ____ name of God!

 

The Savior stood revealed to a convicted and needy ________.
