John 2:12-25
AN EXPOSITION OF JOHN 2:12-25

I. THE TIME OF THE CLEANSING – 2:12-13
The Passover was a festival instituted in                    to commemorated Israel’s                                        from Egypt.

As the death angel passed over the homes on whose roof beam and doorpost the               was applied so the                    of God passes over those who by faith have the blood of Christ applied to their hearts.

II. THE NEED OF THE CLEANSING – 2:14
Here comes Jesus (God                   ) entering Jerusalem’s temple noticing that the court of the Gentiles had been changed into what must have resembled a                               .

The feast of the Passover was at hand, when all                   must be removed from Israel’s dwellings. And there in the temple, were the animal vendors and money changers motivated by greed and practicing                              .

III. THE METHOD OF CLEANSING – 2:15-16
Notice that one man (the        /Man), single handed, takes a whip and cleans house and the whole crowd flees in             before Him.
The condition of the temple was a vivid                    of the spiritual                                    of the nation.

IV. THE CAUSE OF THE CLEANSING – 2:17
God is              as well as Love. God is inflexibly righteous as well as infinitely gracious. God is                     as well as merciful.

When Jesus cleansed the temple, He "declared         " on the hypocritical religious leaders of His day, and this ultimately led to His              . Indeed, His zeal for God's house did consume Him!

V. THE RESPONSE OF THE JEWS TO THE CLEANSING – 2:18
If the religious leaders would have known their Old Testament they would have known that what Jesus did was in fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy in                         .
The request for a sign not only showed their ignorance of Scripture but showed their unwillingness to admit their                .

VI. THE RESPONSE OF JESUS TO THE JEWS DEMAND – 2:19-21
In raising Himself from the                 Jesus would furnish the final                      that He was Immanuel, “God with us.”

In this mysterious statement, our Lord actually predicted the end of the Jewish                system. In Christ the legal system has ended. He is the new sacrifice and the new                        .

VII. THE RESPONSE OF THE DISCIPLES TO THE FULFILLMENT OF JESUS’ PREDICTION – 2:22
No doubt the disciples unwillingness to accept the fact that the Messiah would certainly             and         kept them from believing in the resurrection.

It wasn’t until the disciples saw with their own        the resurrected Christ  that  they  remembered  what  He  said  and
the  Scripture  and  the  word  which  Jesus
had spoken.

VIII. THE RESPONSE TO THE MIRACLES OF JESUS – 2:23
Because of the manner in which His              was displayed many believed in His name but obviously did not understand who they were believing in nor did they                         their hearts to Him.

Signs are done in order to strengthen true, saving faith. Of themselves they do not              faith. The Holy Spirit must do this. Moreover, once saving faith is present, one will believe in the word of Jesus even when there is no                          .

IX. THE RESPONSE OF JESUS TO THOSE WHO BELIEVED - 2:24-25
Jesus did not look upon all who believed in His name as true believers because he knew their                       .

They were fascinated and enthralled by the miracles but did not believe that Jesus was the                     , the Christ, the Son of the living God. That has to be                                from above.
