John 13:1-11
JOHN 13:1-11
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

I. JESUS LOVES HIS OWN 13:1

The omniscient ________ Christ (God in the flesh) knew from eternity past, everything He would ever do, and ______ He would do it. Acts 15:18

Jesus, from eternity past to eternity future, ______ His own (those that the Father has given Him, His people, His sheep). He considered this to be the suitable time to display His love, by washing His disciples’ feet before going to the ______.

In the full consciousness of the fact that He was about to return to the Father, Jesus, who had ______ his own all along, knew that the proper time had arrived to reveal to them His love to the _________.

II. JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES AT THE SUPPER 13:2-4

The Synoptics and John are describing the _____ supper, the Passover meal. But John, having read the accounts of the others, omits, and ____, certain details that are not in the Synoptic accounts.

It was Preparation Day (paraskunē), which has long been the regular term for ______ in the Greek language and as the Greek calendar indicates.

It was the ______ who had introduced this despicable purpose of betraying Jesus into the ______ of Judas Iscariot.

He who did not consider ________ with God a thing to be held on to, humbled Himself in order to ______ His disciples.

III. JESUS WASHES THE DISCIPLES’ FEET 13:5

The ________ of feet would naturally occur at the beginning of a ______, not at the end.

Because it was considered a menial task, only the lowly _________ of the house were to perform the washing of the guests’ ______.

In the absence of a servant in the Upper Room, one of the disciples should have performed this task of washing the feet of the others. But none was ________. These men were too ______.

All of a sudden, assuming the role of a lowly ______, Jesus got up, poured water from the pitcher into the washbasin and began washing the disciples’ ______.

IV. JESUS HAS TO REBUKE PETER 13:6-9

Being puzzled and ashamed (with the exception of ______) of the fact that Jesus was doing for them what they should have done for Him and for each other, all the disciples except ______ were at a loss of what to say.

Peter was more than embarrassed; he was ____________  that the King of glory would stoop to wash his feet, the feet of a sinner. This is the same Peter who in shame and disgrace earlier said on a fishing trip with Jesus: “Go away from me Lord for I am a ______ man.”

Jesus answered, “If I do not wash you, you will no longer be my disciple.” The meaning is simple, yet very profound: “Peter, unless by means of my entire work of ____________ — of which this feet-washing is only a part — I cleanse you from your sins, you cannot be forgiven of your sin and declared righteous before God. Therefore you cannot be my ______.”

The disciple is not to ______ his Master. He is to listen and ______.

V. JESUS MAKES KNOWN HIS BETRAYAL 13:10-11

By grace, through faith in Jesus Christ, we have been made clean through His ______ (justified-declared righteous) once and for all, and have no need to be made ______ again.

Because justified believers (cleansed believers) live and walk in a sinful world, their _________ feet get dirty, and there is a need for daily cleansing through confession of sin, in order to restore fellowship with the Lord. We call that ____________. 1 John 1:8-9

In order to indicate that He is not taken unawares by Judas, and, in order to make the traitor solely _________ for his actions, Jesus says to the disciples, there is one among you who is not spiritually ______.

In the case of Judas it was not a matter of losing spiritual ____, but of manifesting the fact that he never had it. He was not a sheep of Christ becoming ______, but a dog returning to his vomit. 2 Timothy 2:19
