John 13:12-20
JOHN 13:12-20
JESUS SETS AN EXAMPLE OF HUMILITY

I. JESUS ASKS A PROBING QUESTION 13:12

Jesus asked the __________ after washing their feet: do you understand what I have just done to you? “Do you ________ the positive, practical teaching that I have just now imparted to you?”

Three things concerning Jesus washing the feet of the disciples must be understood in order to appreciate Jesus teaching here.

1. The washing of the disciples’ feet was an essential element in Christ’s __________. He took on the position of a lowly servant.

2.  The washing of the disciples’ feet was a ______ of that humiliation which Jesus endured on the ________.

3. The washing of the disciples feet was a ________ in humility; in other words, an _________ for believers to follow.

The disciples, who had been arguing as to who was the greatest among them, needed a heavy dose of _________ and though they didn’t understand what Jesus was doing, He nevertheless gave them a vivid lesson of _________ they would never forget.

II. JESUS SETS AN EXAMPLE FOR HIS DISCIPLES TO FOLLOW 13:13-15

The disciples were correct in addressing Jesus as Teacher (didaskalos), for His teaching was the ________ that was ever heard. “He taught with __________ and not as the scribes.”

The disciples were also correct in addressing Jesus as Lord (kurios) for His miracles and teaching proved Him to be ________ incarnate (the Hebrew word for _______ and God).

Surely, if the Lord of glory is willing to _________ Himself by washing the disciples feet, it ought to be easy for them (_______ disciples) to perform loving service to one another in the spirit of genuine humility!

What Jesus had in mind was not an outward ______(washing feet) but an inner __________ (humbling oneself) in serving and loving others.

III. JESUS WARNS AGAINST NOT PUTTING HUMILITY INTO PRACTICE 13:16-17

If humbling oneself was not below the dignity of the _________, it surely should not be considered below the dignity of the “servant.”

If you think you are beyond ________ others then you think way more ________ of yourself than you ought, and you have forgotten that the Lord Himself came not to be served but to serve and give His life a ransom for many.  Romans 12:10

To be blessed (makarios) means, fundamentally, to be __________, to be the objects of God’s ________.

We must ask ourselves whose blessing, whose approval, whose favor are we seeking? Man’s or God’s?  John 14:21, 1 John 2:4

IV. JESUS KNOWS THOSE HE HAS CHOSEN 13:18-19

Jesus makes it clear that He knows those He has _______ and they will follow Him. Those He has not chosen will ______ against Him.

The only reason the other apostles did not lift up their heel against the Lord was because He sovereingly chose them and set them apart to be His followers, to _______ Him and ______ His word.

Judas, on the other hand, is a type of the __________ sinner who loves darkness rather than light because his deeds are evil. He does so because that is what he is by ________, and God in justice does not choose to have mercy on him but hardens him in his sin.  John 5:21

Judas, though chosen to be one of the twelve apostles, was not chosen unto __________ but __________ (punishment in hell), thus in John 17:12 he is called the son of perdition.

Jesus wanted His disciples to see that Judas’ betrayal was a part of God’s eternal ______ of redemption and as such should strengthen their _______.

The disciples must continue to ________ that Jesus is the I AM WHO I AM, the _______ Son of God who was, and is, and is to come.

V. JESUS COMMISSIONS HIS DISCIPLES 13:20

As Christ was sent from the Father, so Christ’s disciples are sent by Him. By this gracious analogy Jesus _____ His disciples with authority and inspires them with courage. Thus the Lord fully identifies them with Himself and the Father who are ____.

As Christ’s disciples they will continue what Christ ______ by the power of the ____________, who will soon indwell them upon Christ’s departure back to His Father.

The disciples of Christ will be treated like Him. _____ will receive the gospel they bring; ______ will not and will even seek to kill them like they did their Lord.  Luke 10:16

When the _____ of God is carried out, and Judas betrays the Lord, delivering him into the hands of the enemy, the disciples must remain steadfast in their faith and remain __________ for Christ.
