John 12:1-11
JOHN 12:1-11
JESUS ANOINTED AT BETHANY

I. JESUS ARRIVES BACK IN BETHANY 12:1

Six days before the Passover (pascha – the Passover __________) Jesus came again to Bethany where He raised Lazarus from the dead.

Why did Jesus go back to Bethany? Two reasons:

To see His dear ________, Mary, Martha, Lazarus and Simon the leper and prepare them for His soon coming ______ as the Passover Lamb just six days away.

To bring more _______ into the fold that the Father had given Him. Before Jesus left for Jerusalem _____ Jews had come to ________ in Him.

II. A SUPPER IS MADE IN HONOR OF JESUS 12:2

Upon arriving in Bethany Jesus was invited to dinner at the home of Simon the _______, according to the account of Matthew and Mark (Matthew 26; Mark 14).

Martha and Mary were present and _______ Jesus and the other quests. Because Jewish etiquette did not allow for women to sit with men at a meal, we must deduce that the guests for dinner were entirely _____.

Their ____ for Jesus cast out all _____ of what the Sanhedrin might do to them for not turning Jesus in to be arrested.

III. MARY ANOINTS THE FEET OF JESUS 12:3

John’s, Mathew’s and Mark’s account of Mary washing the feet of Jesus with precious ointment is not to be confused with Luke’s account of the “_______ woman” who washed the feet of Jesus with her ______.

Mary took a pound (litra - ______ ounces) of very precious (polutimos very costly or very expensive) ointment (muron myrrh or perfumed oil) of pure nard (pistikos nardos – unadulterated, untainted, nard – a fragrant _____ from the Himalayas) and anointed (aleiphō – to oil with perfume) the feet of Jesus.

Mary’s love for Jesus is expressed in the _________ her sacrifice. She gave of the best and that which cost her ______.

IV. JUDAS’ RESPONSE TO MARY’S ACT OF ANOINTING THE FEET OF JESUS 12:4-5

Judas had no heart for Christ and could not _________  Mary’s devotion to her Lord. A _________  person cannot understand or appreciate the generosity of others.

The Bible warns that the _____ of money is the _____ of all sorts of evil.  1 Timothy 6:9-10, Matthew 6:24

V. THE MOTIVE OF JUDAS’ RESPONSE TO MARY’S ACT OF ANOINTING THE FEET OF JESUS 12:6

Though Judas gave the impression he was concerned for the _____ he was in fact thinking of what was in it for ____.

In addition to being a ______, Judas was a _____ when he gave the impression he was concerned about the poor.

Though the disciples might have been in the dark as to what Judas was doing, the _________  Christ knew full well what he was doing and that he was held captive by ______ to do his will.

VI. JESUS’ VINDICATION OF MARY 12:7

Only ____ comes to Mary’s defense, but that One was the greatest of all! Jesus therefore said, Let her be, (it was) in order that she might keep it for the day of my burial. It was the _____ Shepherd protecting one of His sheep from the wolf.

Did Mary know what she was doing? Matthew 26:12 indicates that she did: When Mary poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial.

VII. WORSHIPING AND SERVING CHRIST TAKES PRIORITY OVER CARING FOR THE POOR.  12:8

Jesus was telling them that anointing Him in anticipation of His burial was more _________ than taking care of the ______. Luke 14:13

It is a right thing to do to care for the poor, but at that moment the whole mind of God was centered on the Person and work of _________. This was evidenced by His _________ Mary to anoint the Savior for His burial, which unknown to man would take place in just six days.

VIII. THE CURIOSITY OF THE CROWD 12:9

The Jews mentioned here are not the religious _________ but the curious who came to see Jesus, the great _____________, and Lazarus, whom He had raised from the stench of death.

What a wonderful truth that by ______ we can see with our spiritual eyes all Jesus did while on earth as we read and study _____ word.

IX. THE PLAN AND THE MOTIVE OF THE CHIEF PRIESTS 12:10-11

The chief priests were absolutely ________. In order to regain their popularity they were willing to kill not only Jesus but also _________.

Many of the Jews having seen Lazarus alive were going away believing in Jesus who raised him from the dead (episteuon – to trust in, rely on). They were putting their _____ in (eis – _____) Jesus.
