John 11:1-10
JOHN 11:1-10
CHRIST RAISING LAZARUS

INTRODUCTION

In the last few chapters we have seen an increasing ________ of Christ’s _______, a hostility that eventually ended in His crucifixion.

Man’s utter sinfulness and ________ have also been clearly seen. The ______ had shined in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it. The deep guilt of men had been demonstrated by their refusing “God’s only begotten Son.”

Before Jesus goes to the ______, the Father gives a ______ witness to the glory of His beloved Son.

I. LAZARUS AND HIS SISTERS 11:1-2

The person with whom ______ power and glory will be displayed is mentioned here in the text. His name is Lazarus (an abbreviation of Eleazar, meaning “he who God _______”).

The Lazarus of John 11 lived in the town of ________ meaning “House of ________.”

________ was evidently the elder of the siblings for we are told in Luke 10:38 that “Martha received Jesus into ____ house.”

Of Martha’s sister _____, it is said in Luke 10:39, “And Martha had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His ______.”

II. THE SISTERS APPEAL TO THE LORD 11:3

Instead of ________ Christ what should be done in their brother’s case, the sisters (through a messenger) simply ________ Him of his desperate condition.

The sisters left it for ______ to ________ what should be done.

It is the ________ of the child of God to make known his requests with thanksgiving leaving the ________ to the sovereign will of the Lord.

People talk of “claiming” from God. But “_______” cannot be “claimed,” and ___ is of grace. The very throne we approach is one of grace.

Christ’s immeasurable love for ___, and not our _______ love for Him, is what we need to keep increasingly before our hearts. Our love varies; His knows no change.

How utterly wrong are we to estimate God’s _____ for us by our temporal condition or ____________. The Lord loves His own as truly when they are sick as when they are well.

III. GOD’S DESIGN FOR LAZARUS 11:4

The answer Jesus gives the messenger indicates that He was looking beyond _______.

The outcome of Lazarus’ sickness will be “the ______ of God,” that is, the manifestation of the power, love, and wisdom of God, so that men may see and proclaim that Jesus is the Christ, the ________, the Son of the living God.

The glory of the Father is ____ with the glory of the Son. The two are ________.

Let us learn from this that God has a ________ for His glory in connection with _______ detail of our lives.

IV. THE DELAY OF LOVE 11:5-6

Christ’s delay brought out His absolute ___________ to the Father’s will. Not even His love for Martha, Mary and Lazarus could move Him to act before the Father’s _____ had come.

The Lord knows _____ at what time to relieve His suffering people. Often times God brings man to the ____ of himself before He comes to his relief.

There is an important lesson here for the believer: Never try to interpret God’s _____ in light of your circumstances. Dealings from the Father’s hand must ever be looked at in light of the Father’s _______.

V. THE TESTING OF THE DISCIPLES 11:7-10

How this illustrates a common principle in the Lord’s way of dealing with us! It is not the ________ and _____-going path which He selects for us.

How strange the Lord’s ways seem to His ___________ people; how incapable is our ________ intelligence to understand them.

God often ______ His own into places which are puzzling and perplexing and where we are quite ________ to perceive His purpose and understand His love.

Christ’s immediate ________ in testing His disciples was to rebuke their ______.

The Lord here assures His disciples that ________ could happen to Him at the hands of evil men before the time appointed by the Father.

If the disciples walk in the ______ of God’s revealed plan, willingly submitting to it, they shall have nothing to worry about; if they do not, they will stumble as one walking in the ________.
