Christ Raising Lazarus Part 2

I. JESUS ANNOUNCES LAZARUS’ DEATH 11:11-13

Though the Bible often compares sleep with death nowhere does it teach that a dead believer’s soul ______ until Jesus returns to raise the body.  2 Corinthians 5:6-8

The disciples, took the words about Lazarus having fallen asleep ________ and missed what Jesus was saying.

II. JESUS GLAD THAT HE WAS NOT PRESENT WHEN LAZARUS DIED 11:14-15

What a proof was this of the ______________ of Christ. He knew that Lazarus was already dead, though the disciples thought he was recovering from his sickness.

Had Jesus been present when Lazarus became sick a healing miracle would have been _________ of Him; but the raising of a dead man would naturally be a more effective means of strengthening ______ than the healing of a sick man.

Christ’s love is stronger than _______. The grave cannot separate Christ from those He loves.

III. JESUS’ DISCIPLE THOMAS THINKS THE WORST 11:16

Christ was going to Bethany to give _____. Thomas speaks only of dying.

Thomas is not as concerned about Lazarus, himself, and the other disciples as he is about Christ, who must not be allowed to die _______.

Thomas’ heart was in the right place but as we know from Matt 26 his courage _______ him when Jesus was __________ and taken to Golgotha to be crucified.

IV. JESUS FINDS THAT LAZARUS HAS BEEN DEAD 4 DAYS 11:17

It was the Jewish custom in those days for death and burial to take place on the ____ day.

Lazarus’ body was in a state of ____________ making the coming miracle even more miraculous.

V. MANY JEWS COME TO COMFORT THE SISTERS 11:18-19

The closeness of Bethany to Jerusalem is mentioned to explain why so many _____ from the capital had come to comfort Mary and Martha.

All room for _______ was removed for any ignorance the Jewish leaders had about the person of Christ. His last and greatest “sign” was given before many eye-witnesses as the ___________ looked on.

VI. JESUS MEETS WITH MARTHA 11:20-22

Martha believed that her brother would not have died had Jesus been present; yet the thought never seems to have entered her mind that He was able to _____ Lazarus now that he was ______.

VIl. JESUS PREDICTS LAZARUS’ RESURRECTION 11:23-24

Martha did not understand that Jesus meant that Lazarus would be raised from the dead ____, so she gives a very _____ reply, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Daniel 12:2, John 5:28-29

It is _______ to believe something God says He will do in the distant future than it is to believe God to miraculously work in your _______ circumstances.

VIII. JESUS CLAIMS TO BE THE RESURRECTION & THE LIFE 11:25-26

Because Jesus is the resurrection and the life He is the _____ and the _______ of the believer’s glorious resurrection and of their everlasting life.

With Jesus removed, nothing but ______ remains. With Him present, resurrection and life is assured for those who by grace and God-given faith _________.


IX. MARTHA BELIEVES TO A DEGREE 11:27

Martha had seen and heard of Jesus Divine miracles and heard many of His I AM’s and other claims of Deity and she _________. However, believing doesn’t necessarily equal ____________, or fully grasping all that Jesus is.

Instead of Martha’s eyes being fixed on ______ and His ability they were fixed on _________ and his condition. When that happed, her spiritual eyes became obscured by ______.

By Way of Application:

The condition of Lazarus in the grave accurately portrayed the state of the natural man _____ in trespasses and sins.

Man is dead, not _____, dead not _______ and needs _____. His only hope is the life giving power of the Holy Spirit of God.

The only cure for dead sinners is known as the “____________.” It is a _________ operation of God that gives blind eyes sight, makes deaf ears hear, breaks shackled wills and opens hearts to believe.
